Early Beginnings

The Service commenced in 1965 under the Directorship of Dr D O Williams, with 80 Telephone Counsellors and a number of Face to Face Counsellors.

Initially the Telephone service was located in an Anglican owned building in Grey’s Avenue. The Face to Face work (which had commenced prior to the telephone service) and administration operated from a suite of three counselling rooms and a reception office in the Central Methodist building, the gift of the late Edith and J H Blackwell.
In June 1977, LifeLine moved to larger premises in the “Open Circle” building. Limitations in space and parking problems caused the service to move in July 1987 to leased premises at 169 Manukau Rd Epsom. At the beginning of 1990 Lifeline moved to premises at 95 Great South Road, provided by Presbyterian Support (Northern).

The building was purchased by Lifeline mid September 2002 and subsequently gifted to the Lifeline Charitable Foundation. Lifeline continues occupation of the building as a commercial tenant.

From June 1973 to July 1981, Rev Gordon Hambly served as Executive Director of the Service. In October 1981 Rev Bruce Mackie was appointed to this position and in 1986 Mrs Rita Inch was appointed as Associate Director.

Increasing Need

The number of Telephone calls and Face to Face counselling hours continue to increase each year. The service responds to many kinds of personal problems: psychological, emotional, marriage and family, people who are lonely, ill or depressed.

Lifeline aims to reduce personal stress through readily available counselling and provides 24 hour, 7 day a week free counselling and phone help lines.
